Bill Ptacek, Director, King County Library System

Bill Ptacek has been the Director of the King County Library System (KCLS) since 1989. Earlier this fall, the KCLS received a 3-year, $998,556 National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to share current development work on the Open Source Library System (OSLS), Evergreen, with other libraries and develop resources to make the OSLS a more viable alternative to the traditional Integrated Library System (ILS) for libraries across the nation. KCLS will partner with the Peninsula Library Sytems (San Mateo, CA), Orange County Library System (Orlando, FL), and Ann Arbor District Library (MI). Working together, these partner libraries will create and develop the critical infrastructure components that have traditionally been provided by ILS vendors and will establish a peer-to-peeer support model for open source libraries.

Ptacek became the Director of the King County Library System in 1989. The King County Library System is currently the second busiest library system in the United States with 43 libraries, 1,200 employees and an annual operating budget of more than $72 million. He began his career at the Chicago Public Library and worked as the Director of the Idaho Falls and Louisville Free public libraries before coming to the King County Library System. He has a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Illinois, a Masters Degree in Library Science from the State University of New York and Advanced Degree in Administration from the University of Chicago. He has also served as an adjunct professor and a visiting speaker at the University of Washington’s Information School.

Ptacek has served as Co-Chair of the Legislative Planning Committee and has been involved in a number of community activities including more than five years of service on the KCTS Public Television Advisory Board, Chair of the King County Board of Developmental Disabilities, member of the King County Governance Commission and President of the Bellevue Rotary Club 2002-2003. Bill is also an active member of the Public Library Association (PLA), having served on more than a dozen committees, and was the 2000 recipient of the Charles Robinson Award from the Public Library Association, which recognizes a public library director for implementation of innovative change.

Eric Lease Morgan, Head of Digital Access and Information Architecture Department at the University Libraries of Notre Dame

Eric Lease Morgan is the Head of Digital Access and Information Architecture Department at the University Libraries of Notre Dame. He considers himself to be a librarian first and a computer user second. His professional goal is to discover new ways to use computers to increase library collections and improve library services. Some of his more notable investigations have surrounded the automatic collection of electronic serials, the indexing of open access content and the personalization of library websites. The vast majority of Eric’s publications are available online, and the same is true for all the software he has written. Eric has been practicing open access publishing and open source software distribution since before the phrases were coined. In his spare time, he can be seen folding defective floppy discs into intricate origami flora and fauna.

Lease Morgan holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Bethany College and a Masters of Information Science from Drexel University. In addition to his position at Notre Dame, he is also the CEO and President of Infomotions, Inc., a consulting firm that provides teaching and computer programming services to libraries, librarians, and other library organizations. With more than twenty years of experience, Infomotions assists libraries to learn about, create, and maintain digital library collections and services that are usable, scalable, sustainable, and relevant to your patrons. Eric is the recipient of many honors including the 2005 Foik Award (Librarian of the Year) from the University Libraries of Notre Dame, the 2004 LITA/Hi Tech Award for Outstanding Communication, and being named a 2002 Mover & Shaker by Library Journal.
